50. Clark, A. M., [Dubois, A.] Jan. 3.
Scissors are fitted with appliances for gripping the articles cut, such as flowers or fruit, or for holding objects suspended in windows &c. The shanks have slots receiving a pin on the forked end of a wire or rod B1 moved to open or close them by a ring sliding in a slot in the handle of the instrument. A cross piece sliding in a slot and retained by flanged heads screwed on at opposite sides, or a ring sliding on the rod A, may replace the above ring. The gripping appliance may be a ledge on one blade, against which the other blade pressed the severed part; or a spring nipping plate or jaw on one or both blades may be used. Cutters with a guillotine or other action may be used. A cord passing through a tubular rod A or through oblique slots at its ends and through a groove or staples along it may replace the rod B1, a spring then closing the jaws.
