Description

A pair of adjustable buttonhole scissors marked "PLUM" on the pivot area. Shank is square reverse, pivot is a screw; cross section is cs4, and shoulder is st4 (?). The underside of the pivot area has been scored to create a filed surface. There were at least two cutlers named Plum in England who were known to make scissors and/or shears: One was George Plum of Dolphin Street, Bristol (ref: 1850 Hunt & Co. Directory of Bristol and South Wales) who had been in business since 1720 and made scissors (ref: The Bristol Mercury and Daily Post, Western Countries and South Wales Advertiser, Saturday 16th September 1893, p6, accessed via newspapers.com); the other was Charles Tucker Plum of Oxford Street, London (ref: 1874 Post Office Directory for London, accessed via Grace's Guide, gracesguide.co.uk).
