A pair of scissors with a folding handle design which was patented in 1919 (no. 139086) by Arthur Smith trading as J.Y. Cowlishaw. The bows fold away flat to the shanks so that they "do not protrude on either side when the scissors are folded for storage or carrying purposes, in which condition the scissors are of approximately uniform width and thickness from end to end." (ref: patent document).
The pivot is a screw, point is leaf type; the shoulder transition is st3, and the blade type is cs4. Marked "COWLISHAW SHEFFIELD ENGLAND" on one side of the pivot area, and "PAT. NO 139086" on the other. The under have a pairing mark (the number 3).Category
