Description

Gales & Martin (1787) has two entries for common scissor manufacturers names George Beal: George Junior and George Senior. Both are recorded as working at Bradfield (a village on the outskirts of Sheffield, approximately five miles from the current city centre). The maker's mark for George Senior consists of three elements stacked horizontally, from top to bottom: the outline of a heart; the letter "K"; and the letter "X". George Junior's mark consists of a cross above the letters "PUE". In Robinson's (1797) a George Beal is recorded as a common scissor manufacturer in Stannington (a village within the parish of Bradfield, and approximately three miles from the current city centre). In Brownell's Trade Directory (1817) there was a scissor manufacturer named George Beal at Spring Street, which is in the West Bar area on the edge of the city centre.
