Jonathan Oaks is listed as a fine scissors manufacturer in Gales & Martin (1787). He is listed in the "Neighbourhood" section as being at Attercliffe, a district to the north east of Sheffield, which at the time would have been a rural community. His mark consists of three elements, stacked horizontally from top to bottom: a cross; the letter "I"; and the outline of a heart.
Subsequent directories list scissor manufacturers named Jonathan Oakes (note variation in surname) at Attercliffe or Attercliffe Bridge as follows:
