Description

Jonathan Oaks is listed as a fine scissors manufacturer in Gales & Martin (1787). He is listed in the "Neighbourhood" section as being at Attercliffe, a district to the north east of Sheffield, which at the time would have been a rural community. His mark consists of three elements, stacked horizontally from top to bottom: a cross; the letter "I"; and the outline of a heart. Subsequent directories list scissor manufacturers named Jonathan Oakes (note variation in surname) at Attercliffe or Attercliffe Bridge as follows: Wardle & Bentham, 1814-1815 Brownell, 1817 Gell, 1825 Pigot's, 1828-1829 - Attercliffe Bridge Pigot's, 1834
