Description

12,070. Rowe, G. B. June 1, A.D. 1903, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Shears. — Relates to shears having hollow two-edged blades, bent from sheet metal, devices, held by the pivot of the shears, for taking up wear of the blades, and a sharpening attachment, placed when in use in the blade opposite the one to be sharpened. The outer edge 5 of each blade 1, 2 is “bearded” or serrated, for use in cutting heavy material, for which purpose the handles are reversed, and the serrated edges brought into proximity by interchanging the positions of the blades. Each blade has a tubular “butt-end” 3 on which is mounted a sleeve 18 carrying a handle 4. The blades are held together by a headed bolt 7, having a notched end, which engages the sides of a slot in a spring-plate 11. Any looseness in the blades due to wear may be removed by advancing a nut 16, which curves the plate 11 and thus draws the blades together. The nut is prevented from slipping on the tube 3 by a pawl, which engages with teeth 13 but may be released therefrom by rotating the nut. The lower blade 2 carries an unadjustable spring plate 24. When it is required to sharpen a blade, a block 25, Fig. 5, having attached to its flat side a renewable plate of corundum, emery, &c., is fitted in the hollow part of the opposite blade. It is held, partly by recesses in the blade, which engage corresponding fins 30 of the b’ock, and partly by a plate 28 which holds the lug 27 down on an elastic pad 29. The movement of the shears as in cutting will then sharpen the blade. The handles are held on the tubes 3 by thumb-nuts 23 which work on screwed stems 21, surrounded by compressed coil-springs. Each handles may be fixed in one of the two positions by fitting one of the two notches on the sleeve 18 over a lug 19 on the tube 3. The handle is reversed by drawing it back until the notch is free from the lug and then rotating it into the second position, where it is held by the other notch.
