1721. Jervis, J. July 3.
Table, carving, and like knives and forks; scissors and shears. -- The bolsters and tangs or hafts or handles of table &c. knives, or the blanks or bodies of forks, or the handles of scissors or shears are cast on to the blades or blanks of such articles and the cast-iron parts are afterwards annealed. Fig. 1 shows a mould used in casting the handles and bolsters on to fork blanks. The blanks B are embedded in sand, and branches E lead from the main pouring gate D, for the molten metal, to each blank. One opening a from each passage E enters the mould of the handle and bolster close to the blank so that the metal forming the bolster b may not be unduly chilled or hardened. In the annealing process the steel portions B, Fig. 2, are protected by a coating of pitch &c., and the articles are introduced into a receptacle F. The steel portions B of the articles are embedded in a layer a of wood charcoal, the object of which is to make good any loss of carbon the steel may sustain, and the cast-iron portions C are embedded in the usual materials employed in annealing cast iron. The annealing process is then carried on in the usual manner.Cataloged By
