Shears. -- The steel cutting-plate which is to be welded or fastened on to a malleable-iron or other soft-metal stock to form a shear-blade is made longer than usual, so that the bearing-surface round the pivot of the shears shall be entirely of steel. A malleable-iron stud is formed on the stock somewhat larger in diameter than the screwed rivet intended as the pivot of the shears and a corresponding hole formed on the steel plate, which is thus held in position for welding. The hole is placed so that the bearing-surface shall be of as large an area as possible. A screw hole is afterwards tapped or punched in the malleable-iron stud, and the blades are secured in the usual way. The portion of the blade shown shaded in Fig. 3 may be ground to a lower level than the rest of the blade.Cataloged By
