Shears. -- The can opener shown in the Figure consists of a pair of shears, the lower jaw of which is formed with the handle 7. The upper jaw is provided with the lateral extensions 5, 6. The extension 6 is turned to the right and, being placed near the front of the blade, prevents the tool from being thrust too far into the tin. The rear extremity 61 rests upon the tin and forms a fulcrum. It is preferably turned under the handle. A coiled spring placed between the pins 9, 10, tends to keep the jaws extended. The point 12 of the lower cutting-edge is in advance of the upper blade, by which means the lower blade is prevented from lifting out of the tin on pressure being put upon the handle. The upper edge of the handle is bent over to receive and protect the fingers.Cataloged By
