28802. Thompson, W. P., [Underwood, J. B.]. Dec. 30.
Scissors and shears; string and thread cutters. -- To facilitate tying the ends of a broken thread, a pair of pliers is employed of the form shown in Fig. 5. The pliers are provided with a cutter 5, a spring D for normally holding the jaws open, and a ring a5 by which the device is suspended from the finger. The broken ends x of the thread are placed together, and held as show in Fig. 2, by the finger and thumb of the hand which also holds the pliers; the threads are then looped round the curved ends of the jaws and held by the remaining fingers on the left hand, as shown; the ends x are then passed between the jaws, Fig. 3, and while held by them have their waste ends reversed by the cutter; finally the doubled thread is pulled tight so as to draw the loop off the ends of the jaws, and so complete the knot as shown in Figs. 4 and 10. The cutter may consist of a stud 5 having a cutting-edge, which is secured in one of the jaws and takes into a notch or socket in the other; or a pair of shearing blades may be secured to the sides of the jaws. The invention is particularly applicable for use in connection with machines for winding thread.Cataloged By
