Description

436. Puente, S. Feb. 5. Shears. -- To prevent the skin of a sheep from being cut or injured whilst being sheared, the back of the blade, which comes against the skin of the animal, is formed with a raised rib or projection which serves to keep the edge of the tool at a safe distance from the skin. Fig. 2a shows a section of the blade with a rounded rib a, but any convenient form of rib may be used; the blades may also be hollowed as shown in Fig. 3. The handles of the shears may be made longer than usual to prevent cramp or fatigue of the hand. The blades may be entirely of steel or only faced with that metal, and guards a, Fig. 6a, may be screwed to the backs of new or existing blades, slots being formed in the guards for adjustment to or from the cutting-edges. The guards may be hollowed so that they spring and tend to keep close to the back of the blade.
