Description

677. Badger, R. March 6. Scissors and shears. -- The apparatus is used by pressing downwards against the surface on which the fabric to be cut is laid. To the upper blade a is attached a handle b by a piece a1. The curved shank a2 of of the blade a has a broad projection, so that it rolls on the surface. The lower blade d has also a shank d1, which is acted upon by a spring c attached to the tail a2. A flat elastic bar f, attached to the piece a1, moves loosely in a groove in the handle, and has attached to it a piece of wood so that, when the handle is grasped, the tail part f1 of the bar f bears against the tail d1 and gives a shearing action to the blades. A project at the point f2 prevents the blades from opening too far. When not in use, the blades are held together by a ring h.
