Description

979. Purkiss, H.S. March 12. Shears for cutting cloth &c. -- A lower blade A is pivoted to an upper blade C, which is formed in one piece with the stem of the handle D. A spring E acts upon a tail piece A1 of the blade A, to keep the blades open. The motion of the blades is limited by a pin on the tail piece A1 moving in a slot in the stem. In a modification, the stem of the handles is pivoted to an extension on the lower blade and terminates in a cam-shaped piece which bears on the back of the upper blade. The contact parts of the cam-piece and back of the upper blade are chamfered so as to press the upper blade laterally against the lower blade while cutting.
