scissors, fishing, sheffield, tup, nail file, sheath, 1800s, st1, cs4, leaf pointDescription
A small pair of scissors with a pivoted metal sheath/cover attached to one shank. Tup shanks; shoulder transition is st1; cross section is cs4; and the point is leaf. Marked "C. FARLOW & Co" and "SHEFFIELD MADE".
C. Farlow is a fishing tackle and field sporting goods manufacturer based in London, which suggests that these scissors were made in Sheffield for the company for resale, or as a promotional tool. It is thought that these are scissors designed for fishermen to snip line (ref: personal communication, Farlows).
Farlows was established as a business in 1838, and was known as Farlow & Co. from c. 1885 - 1894, after which point it became a limited company. This suggests that the scissors date from the late 19th century.Made/Created
