Secondary Title

The Role of Women in the Production and Consumption of Scissors in Sheffield between 1850 and 1914. (MA Dissertation)

Description

An interesting a wide-ranging look at the role that scissors can play in illuminating women's identity. There are various strands that run through this investigation, including: class distinctions; gendered design and use; domestic use vs use in employment; and changes over time. The theme of visibility and invisibility is also key (for example, where women's formal roles are recognised in census records vs where their informal work in the house or alongside male relatives is hidden from view). Sheffield's unique position as a centre of production - including its environment, the development of this, and the organisation of labour with workshop production and unionisation - also plays a key role throughout. And the scissors themselves are used as a prism for examining these aspects.
