Thomas Swallow is listed as a scissor maker at Attercliffe in Sketchley (1774). Attercliffe is a suburb to the north east of the current city centre, and would have been a rural community at the time. His maker's mark consists of three elements, stacked horizontally from top to bottom: an image of a crown; an image of a star or sun; and the letter "S". A Thomas Swallow is also listed as a scissor manufacturer at Attercliffe in Gales & Martin (1787). His mark is similar but not identical, consisting of three elements stacked horizontally from top to bottom: An image of a crown; an image of a cross; the letter "S". He appears again in Robinson's (1797) as a scissor maker at Attercliffe; no mark is recorded against his listing.
