United Shoe Machinery Corp. were a manufacturer of tools used in the shoe manufacturing trade. Their catalogue show here (not dated, but looks early 20th century) illustrates a range of scissors, shears, and snips, and describes their uses as follows:
"Scissors are made with ring handles, each blade pointed, in sizes 4, 5, and 6 inches long. Shears are made with straight and offset handles as listed. The offset handle, commonly called Bent Trimmers, is so bent that cloth or other material can be cut lying flat on the table. Offset handles are the more popular and are always furnished unless straight are specified.
6 inch Shears, Straight Handles, 2 sharp points
6 inch " " 1 sharp, 1 blunt point.
7 inch " " 1 sharp, 1 blunt point.
8 inch " " 1 sharp, 1 blunt point.
6 inch " Offset " 1 sharp, 1 blunt point.
7 inch " " 1 sharp, 1 blunt point.
8 inch " " 1 sharp, 1 blunt point.
10 inch " " 2 sharp points.
12 inch " " 2 sharp points.
Leather Shears: A heavy duty shear with straight handles. The lower jaw is serrated so that the material to be cut will not slip. Furnished 6, 9, and 11 inches long. The 6 inch is used for cutting cloth and light leather. The 9 inch and 11 inch are used for cutting belting or heavy leather.
Nail Scissors No. 666: A small, curved-point scissor used by operators on buttonhole machines and for wood heel covering. One size only.
Dental Snips: A large-size Shear preferred by some operators for covering wood heels. 8-inch long, curved blades."Publication Details
