Hand-held paper fan with mother of pearl and silver mounts. The fan shows a scene of three women at well painted in the center of fan with silver filigree pattern around the top edge and ends. The opposite side of the fan is scene of two men talking with four women on a river bank, incorporating the filigree border.
This fan was used on the wedding day of Matilda French, when she married her first husband, Franklin C. Gray in 1853. Attached to the fan is a card that notes "Wedding fan of Matilda C. French, Mar. 23rd 1853.
The information is written on the reverse of a business card which reads, "W.S Bartlett, Chairman of the Board German American Trust and Savings Bank, Los Angeles, California". W.S Bartlett is William Bartlett, husband to Franklina C. Gray.
The fan is listed as purchased at Tiffany & Young in New York. The original box for the fan indicates it was made by Mon Ardiet in Paris, France.Label
