This painting, "Aurora," is a replica of Guido Reni's famed work of the same name. The painting tells the story of the dawn, brought by Apollo, a Greco-Roman god who held dominion over the sun, among other attributes.
The original is part of a larger fresco commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese for his garden house, Casino dell’Aurora, which is part of the larger Palazzo Pallavicini-Rospigliosi. Guido Reni was well-loved by 19th century art collectors, and those who set off on Grand Tours of Europe often purchased and commissioned replicas of his work.
