Painting of Josiah Stanford, Sr., (1785-1862), father to the Stanford Brothers. Josiah Sr. was an innkeeper in Watervliet, NY. While many of his sons eventually found their way to California, as did his wife, we do no have any indication that Josaish Sr. ever visited the Golden State.
Both this, and a companion portrait of his wife Elizabeth, are examples of chromolithography, or color lithography.
