The Hewes party, made up of David Hewes, his new wife Matilda Gray, Matilda's daughter Franklina, Matilda's sister Rose, as well as a number of traveling servants. In 1877 the family visited several cities in Italy, where they commissioned several artworks. Among their commissions were two marble sculptures of both David and Franklina.
