Doris M. Runkle earned a bachelors in geology from The Ohio State University in 1950. The following year she was employed by the Ohio Geological Survey as a Geologist Aide, eventually being promoted to Geologist. She studied industrial minerals (particularly coal) and completed cave surveys during her time at the Survey.
