Display, Making of a Decoy - Step 5, John Sharon

Description

The final step of making a decoy is including the specific details of the bird. The artist will burn or carve in the finer feather details, such as that around the head. The artist will also paint the bird to match its natural coloration. The level of detail that occurs here depends on the artist's preference and the use of the decoy. For a decoy that is being made for hunting use, the details do not need to be as finely drawn. Art pieces or collectible decoys will be much more detailed in an attempt to recreate the bird in nature. While highly realistic and detailed, this example is for hunting use, as indicated by the keel on the bottom.
