Description

This is a small canning crock with a lid painted with a deep chocolate glaze. Canning crocks have been used since the 1800s.

Context

Before refrigeration, crocks were used to preserve and hold foods such as butter, lard, salted meats, pickled vegetables, jams, etc. The crocks were made of stoneware, a sturdy and durable ceramic that remains water-tight, even without a glaze.
