Painting by Sir Francis Cyril roseContext
Born in 1909 at Moor Park, Herefordshire, England, Sir Francis Cyril Rose was the 4th Baronet of Montreal Roses, United Kingdom. He was both an artist and an author. Louis Bromfield owned seven paintings by Rose, and in the Honeymoon Room, there is a small book of Chinese fables written by Rose. Francis Rose died in 1979.
Championed by Gertrude Stein, a friend of Louis Bromfield, the following letter from Bromfield to author and friend Edith Wharton suggests that Bromfield was purchasing the Rose paintings as an investment. Francis Rose died in 1979.
Louis Bromfield's letter to Edith Wharton, April 8, 1932:
"I just bought three modern paintings by a boy named Francis Rose who lives at Mougins. Two of them I like enormously and the third I am doubtful about. Gertrude Stein has bought a great many. I hope she is as right as she was about Picasso, Juan Gris, and Matisse."
