Ashtray, Stork ClubContext
The Stork Club was a nightclub that opened in 1929 in New York City. It shut down for several years during Prohibition. However, it reopened in 1933 and remained in business until 1965. From 1933 until the early 1960s, the Stork Club symbolized cafe society, the so-called "beautiful people" who frequented fashionable clubs in New York, Paris, and London. The Stork Club was especially noted for clientele who brought a mix of power, money, and glamor through its doors.
During its golden days, regulars at the Stork Club included celebrities like Lucille Ball, Charles Chaplin, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Ernest Hemingway, Grace Kelly, J. Edgar Hoover, Dorothy Lamour, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, J. Salinger, and gangster Frank Costello. Louis Bromfield also frequented the Stork when he was in New York.
