Flower Basket Painting, Cornelis Holsteyn

Name/Title

Flower Basket Painting, Cornelis Holsteyn

Context

Cornelis Holsteyn was a minor painter of the High Baroque period, c.1625-c.1660, the Golden Age of Dutch painting. Born in Haarlem, Netherlands in 1618, Cornelis was the son of painter, engraver, and stained glass worker Pieter Holsteyn I (1585-1662). Cornelis Holsteyn died of a heart attack in 1658 at 40. This painting is a part of a much wider Baroque style. This was a style that included sculpture, architecture, dance, music, and even literature. It was characterized by exaggerated motion, tightly controlled and easily interpreted detail, exuberant expression, and an elegant sense of grandeur. Typical subjects for Baroque painters included genre scenes, landscapes, portraiture, historical themes, and still-life. - Research and text by Thomas Bachelder of the Malabar Farm Foundation
