Description

This muskrat skin stretcher was used by hunters to remove the fat and wrinkles out of the muskrat's pelt for use in the fur trade. After skinning and fleshing, the stretcher is used to pull the pelt as smooth and as firm as can be. The pelt is first pulled onto the wire, centering the belly and the back on opposite sides. Then the pelt is fastened by the back legs and at the base of the tail. The hook on the stretcher is pulled down to complete the stretching. Stretchers were previously made of wood. Metal stretchers are still available.
