Book of Hours Framed PrintDescription
The Book of Hours was a medieval devotional book describing appropriate prayers for specific hours, days, months, and seasons.
The earliest of these books date to the 13th century, when handwritten and illuminated books were affordable to only the wealthy. By the 15th century, mass-produced books were introduced in the Netherlands and France. By the end of that century, new printing technology had made the Book of Hours more affordable to the growing middle class.
The framed print of a page from a Book of Hours on display in the Big House is titled “Working the Vine.” It comes from the Livre des Prouffitz champetres of Pierre de Cresens, 15th century, Bibliotheque de l' Arsenal, Paris, Ms. fr. 5064
