Two french apothocary jars stand in cubbies in the grand stair case of the Big House. One reads diascordium and the other theriaq. The jar marked diascordium has obvious repairs, and the story goes that Bromfield's dogs knocked the jar over while running through the house, as they were known to do quite regularly.
While neither of these were used to store medicines in the Bromfield home, that was their original use. Theriaq/theriaque, or theriac in English, refers to a mixture believed to cure illnesses caused by any number of poisons. Diascordium also refers to a mixture, but this a mixture of herbs that often includes an opiate. It was widely used used, although eventually the opiate element of the mixture was removed.Location
