Name/Title

Cape Sounion Watercolor, Artist Unknown

Context

There is a collection of unsigned watercolor paintings hanging in the "Black" Guestroom. One of them has the following pencil inscription on the lower right of the work "Sounion." Unfortunately, this is not the name of the artist! "Sounion" refers to Cape Sounion at the tip of the Attica Peninsula, approximately 43 miles south-southeast of Athens, Greece. A temple to the classical Greek god Poseidon sits on the tip of this Cape. The temple was constructed 444-440 BC and sits over an older temple from the Greek Archaic period. - Research and text by Thomas Bachelder of the Malabar Farm Foundation
