On November 16, 1951, Val Peterson, the Governor of Nebraska, named Louis Bromfield an Admiral of the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska. The top of the certificate has the seal of the State of Nebraska and two seals of the Navy of the State of Nebraska imposed over an ocean scene with a cherub blowing air across the sea, a ship with sails in the background, and Poseidon or Neptune on either side of the seals. On the bottom of the certificate, a drawing of farmland features a covered wagon with "ship of state Nebraska" written on the cover. The American flag flies in front of the wagon, and light shines from a tower in the background.Context
The Admiral program was instituted in 1930 by Theodore W. Metcalfe, who was acting Governor at the time. The program intends to honor both citizens of the state and others who "have contributed in some way to the State, promote the Good Life in Nebraska, and warrant recognition" according to History Nebraska.
