Description

The origins of cake keepers or savers branch off from cake stands and pedestals. Cake keepers provided protection from insects and maintained freshness, rather than simply a display. Made from metal, glass, or wood, they became increasingly popular and decorative in the 19th century. Plastics became a common material for them in the 20th and 21st centuries. The example shown here is painted metal with a simple vine design on both the cover and the plate of the keeper. It likely dates to the 1940s and may be missing the metal frame that allows it to be used as a cake carrier.
