These red and green starboard lights are from a lake freighter that carried bulk materials from one location to the next. The lights served as navigational tools to help prevent collisions at night or in reduced visibility. The red light is located on a vessel's port (left) side, and the green light is located on the vessel's starboard (right) side.
All navigation light systems include red and green sidelights that indicate the port and starboard sides of the ship. Starboard lights' use, colors, and locations remain the same on ships today.
Bulk carrier vessels were also referred to as 'lake freighters' or 'lakers' carrying bulk materials (i.e., grain, salt, coal, sand, limestone, etc.) through the Great Lakes of North America.Location
