Crewel embroidery of the Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse in New York, completed by Charles Hunter. It is estimated to have before 1933. Crewel work is a beautiful, traditional and ancient form of embroidery using wool to create a slightly raised feature on a linen twill fabric background. Charles Hunter was the assistant Lighthouse Keeper at the Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse on Lake Ontario before becoming the Marblehead Lighthouse Keeper from 1903 to 1933. He is known to have the longest tenure as head keeper. He kept busy with several hobbies during slower periods that included weaving tapestries, writing stories, and music.
