Description

These ice tongs consist of two flat, pointed grippers connected in the middle by a metal pin and an ergonomic handle on top, which was used to keep pressure on the ice when moving it.

Context

Before refrigerators became popular in the 1950s, food was kept fresh using ice cut from lakes and ponds. After large blocks were cut using an ice saw, these tongs were used to lift them. The ice blocks would be taken to storage, and oftentimes were delivered to homes by the "Ice Man" for the family icebox.
