Context

Albert Goodwill Spalding was born in Byron, Illinois, in 1850. He was a baseball player and debuted in the top American league, the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players (NA), at just age 22. Spalding also had a business and inventor's sense and created the first official baseball National League in the small shop his family opened in Chicago when the league was created in 1876. The first A.G. Spalding & Bros. shop opened in 1885 on the prestigious Fifth Avenue in New York City. His company went on to create the first tennis, football, and golf ball in the United States and the very first basketball in the world.
