Frederic Schell was born in Philadelphia in 1838. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. During the American Civil War Schell did drawings for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. Leslie's printed 43 of his wartime drawings. Schell's work also appeared in Century magazine, and he did illustrations for the books Picturesque Canada (1879) and The Picturesque Atlas of Australia (1886). Schell also worked as the art director for Harper and Brothers Publishing. He died in 1905.
This drawing of General Ulysses Grant and his family was initially engraved by John Sartain. Born in London in 1808, Sartain emigrated to the United States in 1830. He introduced mezzotint engraving in the United States and also painted portraits in oil and miniatures on ivory. John Sartain's children all followed in his footsteps, establishing one of the most influential families in American art. John Sartain died in 1897.
