Hay KnifeDescription
A hay knife is used to cut manageable portions of hay from a larger stack, which is especially necessary after the hay has been compacted and settled over time. The long, serrated blade was used to saw off sections of compacted hay. It typically has two handles, allowing the user to apply force with both hands. The second handle is often adjustable to allow for a comfortable grip.
Hay knives were essential when hay became too compacted or frozen to be easily removed with a pitchfork.
