Dr. Grace Anne Stewart was born in Minnedosa, Manitoba, Canada in 1893. She was the first Canadian woman to receive a bachelor’s degree in geology. She received this in 1918 from the University of Calgary. Grace Anne was also the first Canadian woman to receive a Ph.D. in geology from U.S. college or university. She received her doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1922. During the summers from 1924 to 1930 she worked for the Survey spending lots of time in the field. Her main interests were invertebrate paleontology, Devonian corals, ostracods, conodonts, and Silurian and Devonian foraminifera. From 1923 to 1954 she was an instructor and later a professor of geology at The Ohio State University. She spent much time and at the Orton Museum working on the large collections and displays. During World War 2 she did special work in geography for the federal Office of Strategic Services and was highly commended by the administration in Washington D.C. In 1959 she prepared an article on the Devonian for the McGraw Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology. Her article included physical and historical aspects, rock types and their economic significance, and outstanding evolutionary features in development. She is the author of Bulletin 32: The Fauna of the Silica Shale of Lucas County and Educational Leaflet 2: Who was who in the Ice Age as well as two dozen papers, most of which were published in the Bulletin of the Geological Society of America, the Journal of Paleontology, and The Ohio Journal of Science. She is also the author of Middle Devonian Corals of Ohio, a special paper of the Geological Society of America, published in 1938.
