Produced by Mason Decoys of Detroit, Michigan, this American Coot decoy was repainted to resemble a Gallinule, or Common Moorhen. Both species are related to the rails, birds that forage along shorelines in mixed vegetation. This decoy was used in the Sandusky Bay marshes from 1900 to 1940.Context
The original title included 'Repainted as a Gallinule'. The provenance states this decoy was restored to resemble a Coot. The term 'Common Moorhen' was not included in the description as: 'in July 2011, though, the American Ornithologists' Union voted to split the American population of the bird into its own separate species, the Common Gallinule (Gallinula galeata).'
