Mary was a child of the affluent Appleton family of Ipswich, Massachusetts. Mary was the great-granddaughter of General James Appleton. She married Louis Bromfield on October 12, 1921, in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Mary and Louis Bromfield had three daughters, Anne, Mary Hope, and Margaret Ellen.
Mary Bromfield wrote several articles that were published in various magazines, such as Vogue and Town and Country.
