Louis was studying scientific agriculture at Cornell University when he returned home to help his father Charles run the family farm. Eventually, they lost that farm, and Louis returned to college with journalism as his new major. Louis left college again at the start of World War I and spent much of his time driving an ambulance in France. Louis Bromfield married Mary Appleton in 1921 in Ipswich, Massachusetts. He bought the property for Malabar Farm in 1938. Louis and Mary Bromfield had three daughters, Anne, Mary Hope, and Margaret Ellen. Louis Bromfield became a dedicated conservationist and was one of the first proponents of sustainable organic agriculture. Bromfield was a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and wrote over 30 books and many articles during his lifetime. He entertained many famous guests over the years, including Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.
