Description

This 19th-century lady's hat was fashioned with lace on a wire frame. The floral trim and ribbon provide a soft feminine look.

Use

"The tilt of the hat was important. The millinery rule was "up on the left, down on the right," which seemed to enhance the balance of a woman's costume" (Reilly & Detrich, pg. 221). A lady would traditionally be escorted by a man on their left. This hat tilt would allow the woman's companion a view of their face.

Context

Hats have always played an essential role in defining cultural values and social status throughout history. In the mid to late 19th century, hats became more than necessary to keep the sun and wind off one's face. They became a way to express individuality, and women were encouraged to show off their creativity with home millinery projects.
