Description

This is a mid-19th-century lady's black velvet bonnet with burgundy trim and ribbon. This bonnet has a simple and elegant design bound to complement its wearer.

Use

Hats continue to play an important role in defining cultural values and social status throughout history. In the mid to late 19th century, hats became a channel to express one’s individuality and women were emboldened to exercise their artistic talents in home millinery projects. Bonnets were worn as a functional item, to keep the sun and wind off of ones face and also to maintain a woman’s modesty. It was considered most indecent to go without a headdress when in public.

Context

The bonnet dominated women's headgear throughout Queen Victoria's reign and has been revived many times due to its charm and grace.
