This sad iron, so called due to its solid metal construction, was manufactured by The A. C. Williams Co. of Ravenna, Ohio. It featured a removable wooden handle, which is missing here. Mary Florence Potts invented the handle in the 1870s, and it revolutionized irons. Previous types had iron handles that could become very hot while heated on stoves.Location
