Description

This is a Smith & Egge automatic sewing machine, 1901. This particular miniature sewing machine is heavily corroded. The 1901 Smith & Egge sewing machine weighs only 30 ounces and was advertised as having automatic tension and a stitch feed regulator. The machine can be clamped to a chair's arm, the table's edge, or any furniture. The device is small, portable, and ideal for carrying by handbag or trunk. Sewing machines such as the Smith & Egge are still trendy today. They were beautifully made, and most were constructed with steel or cast iron. No electricity is needed for sewing machines of this era.

Context

William Smith & Frederick Egge started their company around 1873 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. However, they did not begin manufacturing typewriters until 1896. The average price for a Smith & Egge typewriter was between $2-$4. The company ceased making sewing machines in 1910.
