Description

This china mustache cup, glazed with gold, orange, and blue floral decoration and the phrase 'Remember Me' in gold, offers a reminder of a fleeting cultural moment. Mustache cups were invented in the 1870s to protect men's facial hair from hot liquids. Most men at the end of the century had facial hair, and those who used wax or dye on their mustaches could experience damage to their facial hair style when drinking tea. The lip on the mustache cup protected the hair from the liquid. The example of a mustache cup includes gold accents and a curved edge on the lip. There are also hand-painted numbers on the bottom of the cup. Mustache cups fell out of style after World War 1 because fewer men had facial hair that needed protection when they were drinking.
