Description

This early 20th-century iron has a fuel reservoir and a wooden handle. In raised letters on the top left side is THE MONITOR. In raised letters on the top right side is PAT APR 14 1903. This iron measures 7-1/8" long by 3-1/4" wide at the base and stands 7" tall to the top of the gas tank. The Monitor iron used gasoline as fuel and was patented in 1903 by John C. Lake and his son Bertus of The Monitor Sad Iron Company in Big Prairie, Ohio. The Monitor was such an improvement over the cast-iron sadirons that Big Prairie, Ohio, proudly touted itself as the home of The Monitor Sad Iron Company. As homes converted to electricity in the early 20th century and electric irons began to sell, the Monitor Sad Iron Company started to lose money. It closed its doors for good in 1954.
