Description

Canasta's name is thought to come from the basket at the center of the table, or "canasta" in Spanish. The basket or tray holds the undealt cards and the discarded cards. Canasta is a card game in the rummy family. It is played with two decks of cards, including the jokers. Melds are created by three or more cards of the same rank. Twos and jokers are wild. The game ends when one team reaches 5,000 points. This example of a canasta tray is ceramic, which is less common. Often, they trays or baskets are made from wood or plastic. The other uncommon element of the tray is the personalization for the Bromfield family.
